Background
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, Thom Shapaka became interested in pursuing a career in architecture while still in high school. By working for a consulting firm while attending classes, he was able to represent his high school at local and state design competitions and medaled on a consistent basis.

Upon graduation Thom attended a small private college in Philadelphia to study architecture. He later transferred to West Virginia Northern Community College to study engineering and design while working his way through school as a draftsman. Thom graduated with an Associates Degree in Civil Engineering in 1984. From there he relocated to Columbus, Ohio to attend The Ohio State University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Architecture in 1990.

Just prior to graduation, Thom joined NBBJ, working on projects for high profile clients such as Children’s Hospital. In 1992 he joined Baker and Associates, a small architecture firm with a broad range
of clientele. Here he had the opportunity to work on public projects
as well as private. He helped to set standards for CADD production, interpreted the American Disability Act for local government facilities, renovated a senior center and coordinated a facilities project for firefighters throughout the county. He soon worked his way up to project architect for a national retail client.

In 1997, Thom came to F.A. Goodman Architects where he helps to provide a wide range of services from initial studies through all facets of construction administration. His ability to nurture productive working relationships with clients and the community has proved a strong asset to the firm.

Thom resides with his wife Carla and three children in Gahanna and is an avid fan of America’s Favorite Pastime.
